The Scoop is one of our favorite seated exercise machines. Unlike regular seated exercise machines that have elliptical motion, this one moves your legs from side to side to improve your mobility, working your thighs and legs.  The original version was quite popular but had a couple of shortcomings. For starters, it didn’t have enough resistance for serious athletes. It also had a lightweight design, so it moved around unless you had a stability mat. The TheraScoop addresses many of these issues. We recently had a chance to test one. Here is how it has changed:

Therascoop vs. Scoop: changes

  • heaver weight and a more stable base
  • 8 resistance levels for seniors and athletes
  • a handle for easy movement
  • higher weight limit up to 315lbs
  • more easily adjustable straps.
  • fits under more desks

The TheraScoop is a bit thicker than the original. It can still fit under your desk. It has a resistance knob with 8 levels. Unlike the original version, you can see a significant increase in resistance when you move from level 1 to level 8. It weighs around 35lbs whereas the older model was under 20lbs. This lateral trainer also has a convenient handle, so you can move it around more easily.

I did notice that pedal in this new model is shorter. While I preferred the longer pedals better, this is not a deal breaker. The machine looks and feel sturdier than the original scoop. It was also very easy to assemble. It comes with two stability legs and pedals. You simply have to attach a couple of screws, and you are set. The display is very similar to the original version and shows your stats. You can hold the main button to reset.

Overall, we found the TheraScoop to be a welcome upgrade over the original Scoop. It gives you a much harder workout as you sit in comparison to the original Scoop. It may be heavier but you can use its handle to move it around more easily. Best of all, it didn’t move when we changed it from level 1 to level 8. It is great for seniors but has something to offer to athletes too. A motorized version of this is also in the works (TheraScoop MTZ). It will make its debut later this year.
