Meet SCiO: an awesome molecular scanner that gives you relevant information about your food, medicine, plants, and more. The device fits in the palm of your hand and serves as a spectrometer. You can use it to get information about the chemical make-up of things around you. The data is sent to your smartphone. A device like this can show you nutritional facts about your food, quality of your soil, and authenticity of your medications.
SCiO has a companion app (iOS / Android) that lets you choose how you want to use the device. The more you use the device, the better it gets for everyone (community factor). So how does it work? Here is how the developers explained it:
SCiO includes a light source that illuminates the sample and an optical sensor called a spectrometer that collects the light reflected from the sample. The spectrometer breaks down the light to its spectrum, which includes all the information required to detect the result of this interaction between the illuminated light and the molecules in the sample.
Let’s just say SCiO is one of the hottest products on Kickstarter right now. You can get it for as low as $179 if you are early.
