Ground robots and drones combining to complete tasks is not a new idea. We have already seen researchers exploring this area a number of times in the past. The Rooster is an air & ground robot system that can fly over a short distance to bypass obstacles and complete its mission.
ROOSTER: The Flying Ground Robot
The Rooster has a foldable hex-rotor drone that weighs 8 pounds. It has a max lifting capacity of 10 lbs. The system is complete thanks to Iris, a mini robot with cameras, lights, and microphones that can be operated from a distance of 700 feet. The Rooster can fly for 20 minutes. Defense Update has more info on the story.
