Getting robots to keep their balance when nudged can be done in a variety of ways. You will need to get the mechanical design right and use the right sensors to account for forces exerted against the robot. This video shows two tiny self balancing robots that use a reaction wheel. The motor activates when the robot detects force against it to counteract.

The smaller robot is inspired by Wankel rotary engines. Both have sensors to detect x/y orientation and keep the robot balanced. When nudged on one side, these robots use their reaction wheel mechanism to maintain their balance. The smaller robot can roll and balance automatically. The larger one can maintain its balance on an angle. These robots are based on an open source platform.
