Modular chess computers used to be a thing a few decades ago. Mephisto’s modular chess computer system consisted of a bunch of boards, including a portable computer for various game modules. Mephisto Modular was first introduced by Hegener & Glaserin 1983 with the MM I module. Its auto-sensory board has 64 LEDs to show the moves. It has 3 module bays that you can use to add a display and other components.
