There are plenty of cute hexapods you can buy to play with as a toy. Matt Denton’s 2-tonne robot is not a toy though. It holds the record for the largest rideable hexapod robot, measuring 2.8m x 5m. Mantis can be driven from inside its cockpit or remotely over WiFi. It is driven by a 2.2-litre Perkins turbo diesel engine and can achieve a top speed of 1km/hr.

The Mantis has 18 degrees of freedom and uses a Linux PC as its brain. The PC uses HexEngine software to control the movements of each leg.
