Jacob’s Ladders are classic physics toys that produce climbing electric arcs between two parallel wires. Once the arc gets to the top, it extinguishes and a new one forms at the bottom. The arcs climb due to the air around them getting hot. You can always build your own with a high voltage power source or buy a more polished version like this.

This model has claw-shaped electrodes. You simply have to push a button to activate the toy. It has a cover around the arc, so it is safe to operate in a classroom. This version doesn’t have adjustable arc speed but the other model we tested had this feature. It allowed airflow adjustment from top.
