AI is already capable of outperforming humans in many games, including Chess and Go. When it comes to other sports, robots still can’t compete with the top athletes. Google DeepMind has now trained a robot that can beat humans at table tennis. It is a robotic arm with a 3D printed paddle.

For this project, researchers used a 6 DOF ABB 1100 on 2 x Festo linear gantries. This robot managed to beat 55% of humans playing at intermediate level.
