For the longest time, I used my phone’s internal microphone for audio recording. No matter how great your phone, you are going to get better audio quality from an external microphone. I wasn’t ready to go with a super expensive microphone right off the bat, so the GODOX Cube SL felt like a nice compromise. It is a tiny 48kHz 24-bit float recorder that works with Lightning devices. A USB-C version is also available.
My microphone came in a tiny package. It has a windshield, clip, magnetic, necklace, receiver, and transmitter included. The receiver has a light that lets you know when your microphones are connected. You can link up to 2 microphones, so this set is great for interviews or solo videos. The battery lasts up to 10 hours without the charging case.
These microphones have a simple app that lets you adjust gain and noise cancellation. There is also a light that gives you feedback when noise reduction is active. With Apple Find My location tracking, you will be able to locate your microphone if misplaced. I tested these microphones in windy outdoor conditions and they did an admirable job with noise cancellation. Keep in mind that your audio may sound a bit different with strong noise cancellation active in noisy environments.
