It was only a short while ago that Boston Dynamics announced it was retiring its hydraulic Atlas robot. There were already rumors going around about an electric version. The cat is out of the bag now. The company has announced an electric Atlas that will be stronger, with a broader range of motion.
As the company explains, the first step will be to test this in Hyundai’s facilities:
Similar to our Stretch rollout, we will be partnering with a small group of innovative customers, beginning with Hyundai, to test and iterate Atlas applications over the next few years.
The previous version could already lift and maneuver a wide variety of heavy, irregular objects. The new version will build on those capabilities. With Orbit, you will be able to manage an entire fleet of these robots from one place.
