DARPA’s Robotic Landing Gear Enables Helicopters To Take Off & Land Anywhere

Helicopters will be able to take off and land anywhere thanks to a new robotic landing gear developed by DARPA. This adaptive landing system has folding legs that can adapt to angled, irregular, and moving surfaces. They fold up next to the helicopter’s fuselage while in the air.

These folding legs have force-sensitive contact sensors, which they use to determine the appropriate angle to take in real time to keep the helicopter level. The above video shows how this Robotic Landing Gear works.
