What’s better than a regular drone that can fly well? One that can also walk. In a paper published in Bioinspiration and Biomimetics, a team from LIS, EPFL and NCCR Robotics has proposed a new flying robot that can also walk. The DALER (Deployable Air-Land Exploration Robot) is inspired by vampire bats and has wings that can be used as legs.

The DALER will be able to find victims in dangerous areas after a natural disaster. It can also walk through a disaster zone, allowing the human rescue teams to focus where they are needed. Needless to say, the DALER can be a lifesaver. The above video shows how it works.
