It has a set of small balls that propel the clock. Every 60 seconds, a small ball drops down from the water wheel onto the track and rolls to the left side. Balls are caught and moved up one by one.

This rare clock has a gorgeous rosewood base. The original one was made by Peter Bonnert. You can find it on sites like eBay. The bad news? Something like this doesn’t come cheap.
